“I was lucky enough to train with the Sheffield SCITT, and began my teaching in what I believe the best way possible.”
Becky trained with the Sheffield SCITT as part of the 2012-13 cohort. Following her training, she continued to contribute to the program as a general mentor, and over time, she progressed into the role of Lead Mentor. In her current position, Becky plays a pivotal role in supporting current trainees, offering guidance, insight, and mentorship to help them thrive in their training journey.
In addition to her mentoring responsibilities, Becky is deeply involved in the recruitment process, where she plays an integral part in bringing in new Initial Teacher Trainees. Her experience, expertise, and commitment to the development of future educators make her an invaluable asset to the Sheffield SCITT program.
How did your teacher training with The Sheffield SCITT help to prepare you and support you in your career?
I was lucky enough to train with the Sheffield SCITT, and began my teaching in what I believe the best way possible. I was trained by outstanding teachers, who ensured I had the skills and qualities necessary to maximise my potential. Being able to constantly reflect on my own practice, and receive constructive criticism to improve has accelerated my teaching ability and my career.
What are you looking for in a candidate when you are interviewing?
I am looking to see if the candidate has the potential to work with children, and to be a great teacher. I am wanting to see that the candidate has a passion for education, and a desire to help young people learn and grow. I want to hear that they've tried to gain an understanding of Primary Education which shows they have a commitment to the course.
What are your 3 biggest tips for anyone attending interview?
Do your research - Make sure you have an understanding of life in a Primary School. Read up on what the SCITT is, so you can answer questions with knowledge and experience.
Be prepared - Prepare your answers to questions. There are lots of sample interview questions online, so you can prepare what you might say. You will sound and be much more confident in your interview if you do this!
Be yourself - I am looking for friendly, caring and passionate people to place with our children. I just want to see that you have the potential to learn, and that you can be a positive role model to our children.
What makes a great teacher?
I think what makes a great teacher is the passion they have to be there and who wants to be the best they can be.
A teacher who knows their students incredibly well, who is eager to learn and who can accept help when needed makes an incredible one.
Do you have any advice for trainees to deal with work/life balance during their training year and their ECT year?
Teaching is often a demanding profession but it's also incredibly rewarding.
The SCITT year is hard. but you will get out, what you put in. The harder you work in your SCITT year, the easier your ECT and following years will be.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't take time for yourself in your SCITT year, and ensure you have a healthy work life balance. I have always tried to work whilst in school, and then go home and not work. And do things that I enjoy like exercise or read!
That's not possible now I have two young children and need to leave earlier, so I have made it work for me. I now leave earlier and then work when they've gone to bed. As long as you are getting the work done, it is up to you how you make this work. Enjoy every part of your life, even work!
