Laura chats to us about her experience of the Internship programme.
With Teaching Internships, you’ll get the opportunity to experience a range of activities to help you get a feel for school life. An Internship will give you experience within the teaching profession and you will gain new skills.
Annually, Sheffield SCITT run a paid Internship programme. We have been catching up with one of last years Interns, Laura Fox. Laura did a Physics Internship, and enjoyed the experience so much that she is now training to become a teacher with the Sheffield SCITT. Laura has been offered a job when she qualifies at Sir Thomas Wharton School, in Doncaster, the very school she did her Internship.
I think it is fair to say that undertaking the Internship has inspired Laura’s future career in teaching.

“I had previously looked into teaching as a career but wasn't sure which route to choose. I was given the advert for the internship from my course outreach officer at university, who encouraged me to give it a go! My host school for the internship was fab and I immediately felt at home within my department. The internship gave me the opportunity to see all the different roles of teaching (both in and outside the classroom!). My mentor was brilliant and encouraged me to find my own style and take risks which gave me more confidence when I got to deliver my own segment of a lesson. Other highlights included break and bus duty (which doesn't sound fun until you try it) and inclusion on a staff meal at the end of the week! The internship experience solidified my passion for teaching and I ended up going back to the same school for my training placement 1, where they have now offered me a job in September 2023! My biggest advice for anyone wanting to do the internship is to get stuck in and try everything.”
