Ashleigh Hobson - Secondary SCITT trainee 2019/20
We have recently interviewed one of our current trainees Ashleigh, all about her experiences of training with The Sheffield SCITT.
Which school have you secured a job?
- St Mary’s Catholic High School
What subject will you teach?
- English
When did you start to apply for jobs?
I worked on my personal statement and cover letter over Christmas break and then began applying in January.
How have you found your training year with The Sheffield SCITT?
My training year has been one of the most challenging experiences I have ever had but also one of the most rewarding.
Personal highlights?
My personal highlight is developing positive relationships with students and experiencing first-hand how you can develop their learning.
What did you find most challenging?
The thing that I have found the most challenging is managing a work life balance during this busy year. I am passionate about teaching and need to remind myself to take time out!
Any tips for future teacher trainees?
One tip that I would give to future trainees is to prepare as much as possible over summer. For me this meant reading all of the set texts on the GCSE AQA specification, looking at the mark scheme and question types. This has definitely supported me when picking up GCSE classes.
Did the training put you in good stead for applying for teaching positions and going to interviews?
The training session on Job Applications and Interview Techniques was extremely supportive in preparing me for the process. Teaching applications and interviews are entirely different to any other but the SCITT session prepared me well.
